News from a Biblical perspective

Is there really an agenda?

Education. Common Core. These are hot topics among the cultural and political discourse of today’s United States of America.

There is plenty of heated debate coming from both sides of this issue, the result of two colliding worldviews about who is responsible for raising children. However, beyond opinion and rhetoric, what are the facts? If the Common Core Standards are intended to prepare and equip our children to succeed, what could be so bad about them? Are these standards really part of an agenda to change the American way of life?

The two videos below address these topics and questions. Beyond opinion, facts are presented to support their conclusions. It is up to us to decide whether these facts are correct and verifiable.

“Building the Machine”

The Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) produced this first video titled “Building the Machine“, a movie about the Common Core Standards. The full 40-minute documentary is presented below:

Below is a six-minute introduction to a film produced by former Idaho Legislator Curtis Bowers. The movie, which is titled “Agenda: Grinding America Down“, is an in-depth documentary about the impact of communist ideology on today’s America and the proposed solution to stand against it (hint: it starts with the children). I urge you to buy and watch the full 90-minute movie:

Just this week a new book was released titled “Conform” from Glenn Beck (although he claims that he is really not the author). I have not yet read this book. From listening to some of the discussion about it, I assume that the documentation and conclusions would be consistent with those presented in the two movies noted above. You can learn more about and buy the book by clicking here on Glenn Beck’s Website.

The Common Core Initiative

Representing the other side of the debate, below is a link to the Common Core State Standards Initiative Website, which presents its documentation about the formation of the standards and the common “misconceptions” about them. The “Myths vs. Facts” section counters many of the conclusions presented in the two videos above:

The Decision

I urge you to take the time to educate yourself about this matter, research the facts, and consider world history. You decide – is there really an agenda to change the USA from within, beginning with our children, or will the changes to our educational system really benefit us (including spiritually) in the end? What does world history teach us about moving towards a collective/communist society? Which side of this educational debate stands with God, truth, and liberty?  Who do you believe and trust?

(Note: There are honest, decent parents, teachers, and administrators working within the system of our public schools. They act and serve in the best interests of their children and of the children they teach. They have nothing to do with creating the standards that the curriculum and lesson plans are built around. This debate is not about their intentions or qualifications, but rather about the system itself.)

The Lord Gives, the Lord Takes Away

Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly. (Job 1:20-22)

You may have read or heard about the recent storms and tornadoes that swept through areas of Arkansas. Below is a link to an article about families who experienced loss from those storms. Having a loose connection to the FamilyLife ministry, and because children were involved, we are especially touched by this tragedy.

A Vision Crumbles

With heavy and bothered hearts, yesterday Brenda and I both read the following statement:

Capture_The Closing of Vision Forum Ministries

(Source:, accessed November 12, 2013.)

As for the resignation and serious sin(s) of Mr. Phillips, he explains in his own words:

Capture_Statement of Resignation Doug Phillips

(Source:, accessed November 12, 2013.)

Over the years, our family has gleaned much from Vision Forum Ministries and its companion for-profit arm, Vision Forum, Inc.  Every year, we excitedly received its annual catalog in the mail and browsed the pages while taking in the latest devotional, educational, and recreational material.  Our son Isaac was most interested in the play weaponry and adventure apparatus.  At our annual home school convention, the Vision Forum booth was one of our favorite destinations.  We were so positively affected by the ministry that we contributed to it.  After Isaac’s death, we even directed memorial contributions to be made to Vision Forum.

There is some chatter and speculation on the Internet about the specifics of Doug’s infidelity, which have not been publicly disclosed.  Personally, I make no excuse or apology for his sin(s).  He is responsible for himself and accountable to God and his family.  I hope that he is sincerely repentant and, after some time, his family can be reconciled and a testimony of God’s mercy and restorative power.

This is evidence of how one man’s sin can impact so many people.  There is no such thing as private sin, for you can “be sure your sin will find you out.” (Num 32:23)

You see, I have some taste of where Doug is now.  I too dishonored my God, wife, and family through sexual sin.  I felt God’s heavy hand of conviction upon me, which pushed me to confession and repentance.  I’ve experienced the amazing grace and supernatural forgiveness from my God and my wife.  I know that my sin is taken away and covered by the blood of Jesus Christ.  Therefore, I believe that Doug and his family can be restored and glorious for God.

However, it will come with a great price.  Doug’s testimony for Christ is tarnished and his work in the name of the Lord is all but destroyed.  Doug and Beall’s marriage will never be the same.  Even though there can be forgiveness, restoration, and renewed wholeness, there will always be a scar from the wound of this betrayal of trust.

So men, it is vitally important that we guard our hearts.  I cannot stress this enough.  Take every Godly measure necessary to protect your purity.  If you must, flee from sexual temptation.  Proverbs 7 warns about not even going near the vicinity of the seductive woman.  As a safeguard, put Internet filtering protection on your electronic devices (we’ve recently downloaded and implemented K9 Web Protection software recommended by Steve and Teri Maxwell – read their recent article here).  Pray to God that he will give you the proper heart towards members of the opposite sex.  And finally, but most importantly, stay near to the cross of Christ.  Do not be overconfident in your own strength:

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. (1Co 10:12-14)

Finally, please pray for the Phillips’ family.  Some are speculating about the nature of Doug’s sin and tearing him down.  I don’t want to see a fellow brother’s name dragged through the mud.  Yes, what he did was extremely wrong and very disappointing.  He deserves to be confronted with his sin.  But, if he is truly repentant, let us admonish and encourage him in a spirit of restoration.  I follow these scriptures as my model for this perspective and course of action:

But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all. Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things. To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. (2Co 2:5-11)

Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him. (Pro 24:15-18)

Every Life is Beautiful

The movie opens with the following scene:  A young woman steps on stage.  As she delivers her lines in the performance, she become delirious. She collapses to the floor and her family rushes to her side to help.  We then see the young woman and her parents meeting with a doctor.  The test results all point to one source for her physical and emotion problems – her difficult childbirth.  Then, a secret is revealed…

From that point forward, I was on the edge of my seat and could hardly stop crying.

Every life is beautiful.”  This is the main theme and tagline of the movie October Baby, a very powerful movie with a very relevant and life-changing message that Brenda and I just watched.  This movie’s plot follows the journey of a young woman named Hannah, who through some unusual circumstances discovers that her life “is a lie.”  Hannah goes on a quest to discover her identity but instead finds that she needs something much more valuable.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is mature enough for its theme.  Whether you can personally relate to the circumstances that these characters portray, I recommend this movie for its following messages:

  • the value of a human life, no matter how small or young;
  • learning to relinquish control and trust God again;
  • the command to forgive others just as God has forgiven us through Christ (see Colossians 3:13);
  • healing and forgiveness are available regardless of our past mistakes.

These messages are delivered in a very power and tasteful way.  The production quality and acting are very good.  The move is rated PG-13 due to its mature theme.  The language is clean and there are no sexual innuendoes or gratuitous violence.

You can watch the movie trailer below:

You can also visit the following links for much more:

I at least urge you to consider the messages that are reinforced through this movie.  Do you believe that every life is beautiful?  Do you believe that God is ready and willing to forgive you, no matter what you’ve done in the past?

If you have seen the movie, please feel free to share your thoughts below.

Two Worldviews on Raising Children

The videos below present two drastically different perspectives on raising children.  After watching them, which one most agrees with your values, beliefs, and worldview?

Great news! – The White House petition to stop the deportation of the Romieke family has over 113,000 signatures!  The government’s policy is to consider any petitions that have over 100,000 signatures.

If you would like to read more about the Romieke family, you can keep current on the Home School Legal Defense Association’s Website here or by reading our earlier post.
