Fellowship of Suffering

18 Jul

As I was walking from my vehicle to the office today, this verse came to mind:

That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. (Php 3:10-11, emphasis mine)

My sufferings are really not about me but are about knowing Him. Through my sufferings, I have the privilege and honor of knowing the Lord Jesus Christ in greater intimacy. I do not count myself worthy of such an honor, for I know who I am apart from Him. I can only experience this fellowship if I submit to Him and let His Spirit work in me. Yet, by having fellowship with Jesus in His sufferings, I also experience the power of His resurrection. I find myself fighting this, wanting to hang on to what I can touch, to bring Isaac back to me so that I can hold him and love him. I need to let him go – he is in much better hands. I believe that he is on the adventure of his lifetime.  So, take care my son, until I see you again.  As Steven Curtis Chapman wrote, I “Just Have to Wait”:

Well I can’t wait to SEE your smile again,

The one when your eyes disappear along with all my troubles

And I can’t wait to hear you sing a song

Maybe “Jesus Loves Me” or a song you learned up there

But I, oh, I just have to wait

‘Cause I know that day is coming

So I, oh, I just have to wait

Well I can’t wait to hear your mama laugh

The way that only you can make her laugh when you get silly

And I can’t wait to SEE you in her arms

And know the wound so deep inside her heart is healed for good

But I, oh, I just have to wait

‘Cause I know that day is coming

So I, oh, I just have to wait

And I can’t wait to dance with you again

Knowing that this time the dance will never have to end

But I, oh, I just have to wait

‘Cause I know that day is coming

So I, oh, I just have to wait

And I can’t wait to SEE your sisters play

The way they do when all of you are playing all together

I can’t wait to watch your brother’s face

When he can finally SEE with his own eyes

That everything’s okay

I just have to wait

I know that day is coming

I just have to wait

This song is from the album “Beauty Will Rise”, a collection of songs written and performed after the unexpected and accidental death of the Chapman’s five-year old daughter, Maria.  Steven’s wife, Mary Beth Chapman, wrote “Choosing to See“.  Both Steven’s songs and Mary Beth’s book have helped us through this journey.

      Donald:

Thank you for sharing that poingant song. If our trials in this life draw us closer to God, than they are His mercies in disguise.

      Thanks again for your encouragement.

      Love in Christ,

      Andy
