Someone recently said to us that, given the trials we’ve been experiencing, it is like a storm is constantly circling around our family, waiting to strike us. Well, last night we experienced a night in the midst of a literal physical storm. We camped out in our backyard under our tent. I don’t know if you have ever been out in the open during an intense thunderstorm, but it was awesome! The thunder shook the ground that we were lying upon. The lightning lit up the inside of the tent. The rain poured quite heavy at times. Since I didn’t have the rain fly on quite right, we got a little wet :-). Storm after storm came over us throughout the entire night. Just as one started to wind down, another one would wind up. At one point, I sat up taking it all in when the thunder cracked (it seemed to be right over my head) and I fell back to the ground in fright. We were at the very top of our yard and couldn’t flee to the house because of the storm’s intensity. However, we were protected in our thin and vulnerable tent in the midst of the storm. We didn’t choose the storm to happen, but we were sate in the midst of it. I have never experienced anything quite like it.
Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him? (Job 40:9)
The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad. The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook. (Psa 77:17-18)
But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him. (Luk 8:23-25)
For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day. (Luk 17:24)
In awe of His mighty power,
