We closed the previous post titled “Heavenly Treasures” by quoting John 3:16:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (Joh 3:16)

Since Isaac’s passing, we have spent some time pondering salvation.  Is it really that simple to be saved by just believing in Jesus Christ?

And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. (Act 16:31)

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (Rom 10:9)

He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.  (1Jn 5:10-13)

OK, what does it mean to believe?  Is it merely as simple as having a head knowledge of Jesus Christ, or is there something more?  Still curious, I looked up the word believe in Strong’s Dictionary and the King James Concordance (courtesy of e-Sword®).  You can download the word study by clicking here.

My conclusion is that to believe in or on the Lord Jesus Christ means entrusting one’s self to him for eternal life because only he can save your soul from eternal separation from God.  There is nothing that one can offer to God to earn salvation for “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” (Isa 64:6) and “For all have sinned, and come short of the Glory of God” (Rom 3:23).

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes.  (Rom 3:10-18)

Obviously, this is not an exhaustive study of this topic and there are much more learned Bible scholars than myself.  I do want to declare that I am trusting in Jesus Christ alone for my salvation. How about you?  Do you believe in Jesus Christ and that he alone can give you eternal life?

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.  (Joh 14:6)

Resting in His mercy and grace,

One response to “BELIEVE!

It’s always seemed to me that belief in the Lord Jesus also implies a belief in one’s own lostness, sinful-ness, complete inability to do anything that would earn a right standing with God.( I think that you alluded to this when you said, “only He can save your soul . . .”
It also seems that it includes the idea of repentance, which is a turning away from one’s sin and toward Christ as the only salvation.
I really appreciate the way you are articulating these complex biblical truths.
